As an effort to show support for the tremendous work the South River Federation does at educating and implementing storm water best management practices, EQR donated the necessary labor and materials for this great educational project. South River Federation’s mission is to protect, preserve, restore and celebrate the South River. For those of you don’t know where the South River is; the South River is a 10-mile-long tributary of the Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. EQR and SRF have worked on several projects together over the years as we work well together, because of our similar commitments and values to preserving and protecting our watersheds that flow into the Chesapeake Bay.
The bioretention area (or large rain garden) takes storm water from the adjacent buildings downspouts and directs that water into the garden. The goal is to have rain that falls onto impervious surfaces (such as pavements, roads, sidewalks, driveways and parking lots) be recharged or infiltrated back into the ground. EQR excavated existing soil and brought in bioretention soil which is suited for these types of gardens and placed several boulders to accent the design. The slopes on all sides was stabilized using coir matting and seeded, to minimize erosion. The garden will be planted with grasses, ferns, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees which were specifically chosen for wet sites. These plants will enjoy and thrive with their roots being wet, often. They will become natural assets to the site, not only looking beautiful, but also have high wildlife value. South River Federation also intends to install decorative items in and around the facility later in 2017 which is sure to make this facility as gorgeous as it is functional.
