Ballston Pond-Wetland Creation in Arlington, VA
EQR partnered with the City of Arlington to transform an existing detention pond into a functional urban wetland park that improves stormwater management, water quality, and wildlife habitat.
Constructed in 2021, the project retrofitted the existing pond to restore and enhance its original stormwater management functions while creating a more natural and resilient landscape within an urban environment. Work included re-grading the pond, retrofitting the existing riser structure, restoring native plant communities, managing invasive species, and constructing a platform overlook to provide visitors with a closer connection to the restored wetland.
The 7.24-acre project area included nearly six acres of active construction disturbance, with additional upland areas dedicated to invasive species management and native plant restoration. By combining stormwater infrastructure improvements with ecological restoration, EQR helped create a space that manages runoff more effectively while supporting native wildlife and providing the community with a new opportunity to experience nature in an urban setting.
